7 Tips to protect our skin in winter

Harsh winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin, be uncomfortable and downright painful. While there are some brilliant skincare brands out there, many products other than natural oils are actually unnecessary and can do more harm than good.

No matter how harsh, you shouldn't rush to buy a cupboard of lotions and creams after the first gust of a sharp cold winter wind. The best tips along with moisturizer, natural products and oils will keep your skin healthy, happy and glowing all winter long.

1. Drink plenty of water.

We often forget to drink enough water during the day when it's cold outside, but this is exactly when low humidity causes our weak skin to lose its moisture. Remember to sip slowly and use a reusable bottle rather than sipping throughout the day. Indulging in warm winter teas like natural ginger and lemon is a great way to stay hydrated in the winter – you'll feel healthy, hydrated and comfortable at the same time. This is a win-win situation!

2. Choose a cleaner carefully.

Many skin cleansers actually contain harsh chemicals that can be more damaging than nourishing. Substances such as alcohol and added fragrances will not provide any benefits for dry, cracked skin as they destroy natural oils. Oils like Argan and Tamanu help keep moisture in while continuing to remove daily dirt and makeup.

3. Exfoliate for perfect skin.

It may be the last thing on your mind when you have dry, itchy skin, but exfoliating your skin during the winter months has its benefits. It not only removes dry, dead skin cells, but also helps you form new ones. Your skin will thank you for using natural exfoliants like this deliciously scented tamanu and argan scrub.

4. Keep showers short and sweet.

When it's cold outside, it's tempting to lay in that tub and turn up the heat and take a long, hot shower or bath. However, a big no to hot showers and long baths. Extremely hot water not only dehydrates you but also removes essential oils from your body. If you're getting out of the shower and your skin is uncomfortably red and itchy, it's a sign that you're overdoing it.

5. Use a natural oil and moisturizer and apply immediately after washing.

Choose your face moisturizer and body lotion carefully. We recommend oil-based products over water-based products to keep important moisturizing oils on your skin. Apply moisturizer or lotion immediately after washing to lock in as much moisture as possible, and don't forget to include your hands and feet, the hardest-working areas of your body! 6. Protect yourself from the cold.

Winter is undoubtedly harsher for your skin than summer. Outdoors, we may have the essential lip balm for dry, chapped lips, but we need more than that. The combination of low humidity and these strong, raging winds can cause uncomfortably dry skin, so be sure to top it off. As for skin irritation, many cold weather clothing can be uncomfortable when worn in direct contact with your skin. A scarf and gloves are necessary to protect the delicate skin on your hands and neck; You can try products made from super soft sheep's wool for minimal irritation.

7. Sunscreen isn't just for summer.

We may automatically reach for sunscreen during the warmer months, but sunscreen is also important during the winter months to protect ourselves from these harmful UVs. Make sure to cover your face, neck and hands (if exposed) and opt for a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 protection. Don't forget about easily overlooked spots like the back of the neck, lips, ears and under the chin!
